Is America Taking Over the UK Search Results?

You may or may not be aware but a while ago Google updated its algorithm to show websites in the search results in the UK that are not just UK specific pages. This included webpage’s and TLD’s (top level domains) that may not be specific to the UK.

In a webmasters video yesterday Matt Cutts answered the question that seemed a lot of people have been asking “what is the state of the UK SERP’s?”

In the previous series of webmasters videos Matt briefly commented on this subject. He subsequently also posted an article on his blog going into more details titled More about generic TLDs in (say) UK results.

I would have to say for the most part I would agree that the UK results should include relevant results that may be from .com domains heck Cozy Digital is a .com.

I quote Matt from the below video:

I don’t think you always want every UK search to return only the UK stuff; you want to return .com’s that are relevant to the UK.

This is all well and good for an informational search, however when you start to search for products you want to buy you soon encounter problems as it starts to show webpage’s that the products are in dollars or only ship to the U.S. I have personally come across the problem on many occasions and feedback from friends and colleagues reinforce this. I must say this is very annoying.

I believe that this algorithmic change does not work effectively enough and Google should really make steps to correct it as Bing is only a click away. Matt did say that Google are looking into this and would invite anyone who has specific instances of this should notify Google. Come on Google surely you don’t expect us to sort this problem out for you. Should this not have been sorted before you implemented these changes? I believe that Google offer some wonderful services and as a fan I'm concerned about the state of their search results.

Have you experienced this problem with the UK search results? Let us know.
