has been acting anti-competitively.  On Tuesday we reported that the European Commission Put Google in the Dock and then on Thursday we followed up on  this story with European Commission Put Google in the Dock Pt II.

Following on from this story, Google’s Amit Singhal had posted his comments on the current situation. This lengthy post describes how difficult it is for Google to return search results, and basically how good of a job they do of it.  This was posted yesterday via the Google European Public Policy Blog.

Being a search engine professional who has a good idea how the Google algorithm works, I understand the problem that Google is facing here. I personally do not believe that Google has operated in the manner suggested. However what I will say is that Google are fast becoming a victim of their own success.

There are too many companies that rely on Google for a huge source of their revenue and if their ranking suffers due to a new update of the algorithm then their profits can really take a dent. A lot of these companies may think they are owed something from Google, but what they have to remember is this is a free service which is of no cost to them (unless of course you factor in the costs of search engine optimisation).

Describing Google algorithm Amit Singhal describes the philosophy behind it:

“Our philosophy has three main elements:

1. Algorithmically-generated results.
2. No query left behind.
3. Keep it simple.”

The Google algorithm is basically user generated as it relies heavily on people voting for pages by placing links on their website, thus crediting the site as a relevant resource. You can argue that some  SEO companies may try to manipulate the search results, however search engine optimisation should not about manipulating search results but be about making your content more relevant for the searchers queries. Armin but it best in his post:

“Here's how we see it: the web is built by people. You are the ones creating pages and linking to pages. We are utilizing all this human contribution through our algorithms to order and rank our results.”
