GMail Changes In The Post

The ever-present Mountain View branded free email application – Gmail -has some changes in the post. It seems that a number of Gmail features are facing the chop:

  1. Muzzle
  2. Fixed Width Font
  3. Email Addict
  4. Location in Signature
  5. Random Signature

Don’t worry though, Google aren’t the kind of folks to simply trim features without sweetening the deal. With one hand they’ve taken away, but with the other they have given:

  1. Search Autocomplete
  2. Go To Label
  3. Forgotten Attachment Detector
  4. YouTube Previews
  5. Custom Label Colours
  6. Vacation Dates

Search Autocomplete is actually incorporating Go To Label, just start typing in the search box at the top of the Gmail interface and it will make suggestions based on your input – such as labels and contact names.

Forgotten Attachment Detector is something that I’ve’ wanted in email clients for as long as I can remember. Ever had to send one of those slightly humiliating I-can’t-use-a-computer-properly follow-up emails after you forgot to attach the intended files to the first email? Well Forgotten Attachment Detector will search for keyphrases in your email and prompt you if it thinks you may be missing an attachment.Gmail Logo

YouTube Previews is a simple but effective one. Put simply if people send you links to YouTube videos then GMail will display a preview of the video directly.

Custom Label Colors is another simple one – lets you specify label colour from a wide colour palette.

Vacation Dates (still got my fingers crossed for a UK specific Holiday Dates!) lets you specify in advance when you will be on holiday. Means that you don’t have to remember to setup the Vacation Responder in that busy run-up to your well-earned time off!

Do you use GMail? Prefer Hotmail? Why’s that? Do let us know!
