Ramsay’s Web Wire – Issue #2: Google Bashing

Hey everybody, welcome to the second edition of Ramsay’s Web Wire. Finally things are getting somewhere with the new look blog. As you can see I’ll now be making my weekly appearance right here in the corner, so you can finally put a face to a name. Anyway, to business, and it looks like it isn’t always sunshine on Google Island. The search engine providers seem to have had a bit of a torrid week.

After Microsoft’s recent issues with the European Commission in Belgium, focus has now shifted to Google with speculation that their search algorithm could be construed as anti-competitive. So like a child who won’t share his football, Google have been called into the head masters office. Unfortunately for them it might cost a little more than a letter home with a possibly record smashing fine from the EC. In response to all this kerfuffle, a little ‘Google fellow’ has ventured out to defend the Google Algorithm in today's post Google’s Armit Singhal Responds To Euro Commission Complaints.

It seems that the one little ray of sunshine for Google is that GMail is getting a bit of a makeover as unfortunately they have a few more woes to deal with. In a somewhat controversial (or absurd based on your stance) turn of events, several high ranking Google employees have been convicted in Italy over offensive content which was allowed to be broadcast on YouTube. On top of all this, issues with China have been exacerbated once again as American investigators believe they have linked the attacks on Google to two schools within china. Unsurprisingly this has resulted in a backlash from the Chinese government. It seems Google’s list of friendly nations is getting shorter every week.

One place that is always friendly however is the land of twitter where you can check out what your mates and various celebrities are up to as well as being able to speak you mind (as long as your mind is 140 characters or less). Well the ever popular social networking site shows no sign waning as they hit the 50 million tweets a day mark.

That’s all the news we had time for but we won’t leave you hanging there. It wouldn’t be the Cozy Digital without a selection of juicy SEO tips and info as well as links to some useful internet sources we’ve come across.

With a little help from Matt Cutts (Head of Spam at Google) find out how you can avoid blog spamming. If you use Google Adwords you’ll certainly want to know how to improve your click through rate, and while you’re at it find out why Google won’t always use your Meta description tag. Also some of you might be pleased to know that the nest episode of Analytics TV has arrived. That’s all from me for now. I’ll see you next week, same Cozy Digital time, same Cozy Digital channel.
