Google Make YouTube Safer

As good as YouTube is, there  is content on there that may offend you and your family. So Google has announced that YouTube  now has a safety mode  for you to filter out potential offensive material.

As there is no one at YouTube that checks every video manually, they rely on people to flag them as inappropriate before they investigate a potential offensive video.  Considering the number of man hours this would take to check millions of videos, this is of course understandable.

Although this new feature won’t stop these offensive videos being posted it will however stop people seeing them.

Opting into this service is very easy – at the very bottom of any YouTube page you will find the “link safety mode off” link (although they could of put it in a more prominent place) you can then turn this feature on. If you then sign-in you can lock this setting so people who use your browser cannot turn it off.

This will also disable all comments by standard, however you can still view them but all offensive words will be replaced with asterisks.

The downside to this is you are letting YouTube decide what is offensive and what isn’t, however this will prove to be a great feature for parents that are worried about what their kids are watching on YouTube. Google has stated though that no filter is 100% accurate but this is sure a big step in the right direction.
