Only a month after Google’s threats to leave China, a new nation has had a bone of contention with Google. In the build up to the 31st anniversary of the creation of Iran’s Islamic Republic the countries national telecoms agency was decided that it intends to ban Gmail and will be providing its own service.

Some have noted that it may be no coincidence that this lands directly before the anniversary as this date usually sees a great deal of protests and the banning of Gmail could be tied in with a crack down on this. There have also been reports of disruptions to a variety of other internet services within the country as well as delays in text messages.

YouTube, the Google owned video sharing site provided a great deal of footage of the protests last year and their Gmail services offers a platform for communication as well as their new social networking service buzz. Interestingly the release of Google Buzz for Gmail users was only this week.

While it’s a difficult subject to broach a lot of issues that Google seems to be having is with the way countries control their levels of censorship. It appears that Iran may be doing this as part of it efforts to reduce conflicts from protests.

Last year, Google chief executive Eric Schmidt warned that it was at the peril that regimes attempt to black out media sources.  However, while Google may have their opinion it is beyond their control how countries want to conduct their levels of censorship and state control. With this being the second time this year already that Google have had disputes with nations over their services it might not be long before we hear of further international issues for the search engine provider.
