Happy Birthday YouTube – Where Did All My Time Go?

It’s basically an internet plughole for spare time, a swirling plummeting vortex for good intentions of stuff you really should get done. But now that YouTube has turned 5 years old, it’s time to look back and say thankyou. Thankyou for all the dogs-on-skateboards and cats-playing-piano that I would never have realised were missing from my life.

It’s difficult to remember quite how we spent our time online before YouTube. Ah it was a simpler time; the tuneful squawk of the connecting modem was starting to become a thing of the past (sorry for those still using melodic net connections;) and people were beginning to realise that their broadband connections could actually support streaming video.

Importance

YouTube these days is a multinational video beacon, no longer the preserve of the frivolous, but is increasingly a valid way for companies, organisations and even heads of state to reach a growing and fragmented media market. Want to reach everyone? Well TV just isn’t enough anymore.

The post on YouTube’s blog is undeniably impressive – over 2 billion views per day, support for HD video, broadcasting live sport to over 200 countries – it’s difficult to overestimate just how important YouTube has become.

So from people comedically injuring themselves to political protest, YouTube is arguably one of the cornerstones of the internet. It is a level playing field for conglomerates and private citizens alike. If people like your content then you too could have that much vaulted digital rosette pinned to your chest – ‘YouTube Sensation’.

Happy Birthday YouTube.
