The American Dialect Society is dedicated to the study of the English language across North America and last Firday they announced the results of their 20th “Word of the Year” awards as well as a special award for “Word of the Decade”.
Both of the chosen words were Web related with ‘Tweet’ being selected as the word of 2009 while the transformation of ‘Google’ into a verb successfully won it the award for Word of the Decade. The results are fairly unsurprising, massive adoption of Twitter has resulted in the service becoming regularly discussed in the mainstream, while ‘Google’ has become completely synonymous with ‘Search’ since the company’s inception ten short years ago.
The ADS also gave shouts out to “Blog” which challenged ‘Google’ for “Word of the Decade” honours and ‘Fail’ for its popular adoption as a concise summation of failure.
