Is Google Synonym Searching On the Horizon?

A patent granted to Google on the 22nd of November details plans for them to introduce synonyms to their search algorithm.

As Google mention in their patent application; there is a wealth of information that can be searched on the Internet, but it can sometimes be tricky to choose the most efficient terms to use in your search.  In order to help remedy this Google are considering substituting search terms for any others that are synonymous with the intended query.

The example they give in the patent application is:  “a user may enter the query [web hosting+fort wayne] when the city of Fort Wayne is usually referred to as Ft. Wayne. Or, a user may enter [free loops for flash movie] when most relevant pages use the phrase ‘music,’ rather than ‘loops,’ or the phrase ‘animation’ rather than ‘movie.’”

This example shows how a search enhanced by using synonyms could really help searchers; particularly those that are looking for information on a topic that they might not be familiar with, or an industry that they might not know the specific jargon associated with.

Although Google does currently offer suggestions as to search terms that might complement the original query, but implementing synonymous searching could help Google to provide users with a more straightforward and seamless searching experience.
