Google Maps Its Earth

You might say my default position about some Google products is a touch on the cynical side. One of my ‘favourites’ is Google Earth, I’ve always taken the position that its basically just a toy with few practical applications, seemingly used as a headline bullet point when people want to talk about all the applications Google has released. I’ll admit, it looks great in a video montage.

The Official Google blog has posted a new twist on the Google Earth saga with news of its inclusion in the-infinitely-more-useful Google Maps. So again, with a heavy heart I engaged the 3rd dimension and flew around Google’s very own Earth.

Hmm, don’t like being too much of a convert but its inclusion with maps seems to greatly improve its usability. The ability to be looking at a 2D map or satellite image and quickly swap to a 3D representation of the landmark you are looking at is a curiously interesting experience. Is it any more useful? Hmm, begrudgingly I have to say yes!

Improvements? Well I’d like to see more models representing even more landmarks, plus some simple models to represent more cityscapes would be a nice touch. Higher resolution texture options and some anti-aliasing would be super.
