Are Google Going Green?

In light of the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, it looks like Google have decided to throw their hat into the fray by announcing they are going to do their bit against deforestation, but how? Perhaps they’re working on an army of tree protection Google bots.

Unfortunately not. Google have actually started working in conjunction with two men on the cutting edge of forest science. In their collaboration they want to apply software these two men have developed to the Google Earth application. Google Earth can already be viewed globally and the integration of these with the Imazon and CLASlite software will allow analysis of deforestation and forest cover change via satellite imagery.

Through this globally available technology they are aiming to assist countries who currently don’t have the technology to monitor and control their tropical forest levels and recovery. Fuller details of this technology are available via the Google blog.

Once again Google seem to have come up with a good idea, and in doing so they’ve made Google Earth useful for more than just boredom and perversion.
