Better Ajax Support from Google

As the SMX West conference rumbles on new information is coming to our ears every day. In a development yesterday it was announced that Google is now crawling Ajax pages. While Google has long been capable of accurately crawling web pages it has been a common issue that its lack of support for more dynamic content was a bit of a bone of contention for web developers and search engine optimisers alike. Well apparently no more.

Google LogoThe problem that has dogged many developers for years is that while using dynamic content for their site such as flash menu’s and Ajax applications can improve your sites appearance and performance, it is generally overlooked by Google when crawling the page. As a result Flash and Ajax based sites can be at a disadvantage due to Google’s previously biased view of their content. This put developers in a bit of a limbo state when it came to making a site popular, but still maintain a great user experience.

Fortunately Google haven’t been idle on this issue and this week's development sees the search engines crawler taking a new view of Ajax. This is on top of recently enhanced understanding and crawling of information written in Flash. To allow Google to crawl your Ajax effectively you only have to make a few simple changes to index your AJAX site which is explained in detail by Google.

What this could mean is that as Google and other search engines gain a better appreciation of dynamic web pages, these pages will become more appreciated within the search results. In turn this could see rapid growth in the development of more dynamic sites creating a fuller and overall better user experience.
