Facebook – The Movie

Yes, I’m a little surprised as well, but it seems that the modern phenomenon of social networking is so popular that even the story behind the creation of the online-friend-based-pastime Facebook is now suitable for cinematic glory.

The story seems to have bubbled to the top in recent days after the front man of industrial metal group Nine Inch Nails (NIN to their friends) Trent Reznor posted on his blog that he had been asked to do the score of the film. (I’m sure games nerds remember the music he did for the 1996 pc game ‘Quake’.)

Obviously my scepticism reaches new bounds when the idea of a film based on Facebook is floated. However Mr Reznor’s blog post draws our attention to another fact:  the Facebook film in question – “The Social Network” – is to be directed by Hollywood heavyweight David Fincher, probably most famous for the 1999 urban epic “Fight Club”. Mr Reznor comments:

“I’ve always loved David’s work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story. When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned.”

So I’m only cautiously sceptical now, it has some interesting people attached to the project (not least Aaron Sorkin of ‘The West Wing ‘fame writing the screenplay) so with some good luck and a following gale it might just turn into a decent film.
