Facebook Invades Russian Search Engine

OK so not an invasion as such, more of a legitimate deal, it just sounds more fun when you say invasion…no? Facebook and Yandex, Russia’s biggest search engine, have signed a deal to integrate Facebook information with their site. This deal is similar to that which Facebook has signed with both Google and Bing, though neither Yandex or Google have quite as much incorporation as Bing (who include personal Facebook updates). The chaps at Yandex sound quite happy about the deal though:

“Social networks are becoming more open to the outside world and it’s a win-win situation for everyone,’ says Roman Ivanov, Head of Communication Services at Yandex. ‘Social networking web-sites get more traffic and new users, and search engines obtain a whole load of information that boosts the search quality. We anticipate user interest in social and personal search to keep growing”.

“We feel that this partnership will bring a lot of value for our Russian users as we would like the public information on Facebook to be easily searchable via Yandex,” adds Javier Olivan, Head of International at Facebook.

So if you use Yandex regularly then you will see Facebook updates in the blog search results and you will also see a Facebook content widget on the results pages. The Yandex instant messaging system will also include Facebook notifications.

If Yandex is the most popular search engine in Russia…what is Russia’s alternative to YouTube? Rutube! Which, incidentally, Facebook has just agreed to allow their videos to be posted on their network… Budem zdorovy!
