For years it has almost been the mantra of Google that TV advertising wasn’t part of their game plan. It could even be said that they where staunchly against it having on occasion criticised other competitors for using the medium in the past. In an interview last year, Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt criticised Microsoft for trying to spend their way into a market leading position. Well it seems now that Google have made a U-turn in the biggest possible way with a bit of TV advertising of their own.

When Google do something they rarely do it by half and they took advantage of possibly the biggest TV advertising opportunity available, the Super Bowl. Apparently the search engine giant forked out an estimated $5million to have a 1 minute advert aired during the games third quarter.

This foray into mainstream advertising isn’t a first for Google as they ran a massive campaign last year to promote their web browser Chrome which ranged from billboards to newspaper ads. However, the scale and style of these new adverts is very different to how Google previously went about marketing themselves and seems to mark a turn-around in the company’s strategy. Many believe this could be attributed to Google beginning to feel pressure from their closest competitor Bing.

Either way, with Google turning their nose up at TV advertising for years it seems a bit hypocritical of them to plug $5million into an ad on possibly the biggest platform for advertising in the calendar. Despite this, the advert's pretty good, (maybe a bit too sweet for many) and can be seen below. The advert named 'Parisian Love' was originally one of several adverts by Google broadcast on YouTube and they recieved such good feedback the ad was selected to go on their slot during the superbowl.
