Did Google’s Super Bowl Ad Score a Touch Down?

Early last week I posted a blog on Google’s Super Bowl advert which cost the company $5 million to air. It was the company’s first major foray into TV advertising and a Super Bowl advert is one way to go. Well, now the results are in on the public consensus of the advert. Was it worth Google’s time?

The results of the adverts popularity came from a variety of different areas such as online social media sites, Net Nielsen’s BuzzMetrics and other companies compiled the online reaction, while USA Today charted the reactions of the public who watched the Super Bowl as opposed to tweeting about it.

Unsurprisingly Google’s strongest response came about online via various blogs and social media sites. Even before the airing of the advert there was a great deal of internet buzz about it being on the way. Overall, Google came in second for online buzz based on the measures of various online buzz ranking services. The search engine provider fell just behind the Doritos ad showing that perhaps internet users are fonder of slapstick than technology based love stories. But then, did anyone like You’ve Got Mail? Anyone?

In other ratings it was found that while it was the 2nd most popular, it was only the 4th most watched suggesting that more of its attention came from online than anticipated. Away from the online world a review by USA today found that it only came in at 43 out of 63 among the TV viewers and didn’t make the top ten most watched on TiVo.

What this all seems to suggest is that even with TV advertising on possibly the biggest TV slot of the year Google’s medium is still very much online. However, the power of the net can really make an impact as the buzz that net chatter provides has a tendency to bleed into mainstream culture. While we can’t accurately measure the Super Bowl Ads success, Net Nielsen seems to have a handle on things with their Blended Media Score of the Super Bowl Ads.

Both the Doritos and Google Ads are available here below so let us know what you though of each.
