Google In China – Could This Be The End-Game?

It has been a recurrent story over the past weeks, the international spat between an internationally famous internet powerhouse and the world’s most populous country, from the outset it seemed like this titanic clash had the capacity to make its reverberations echo across the globe.

Google LogoOver the weekend BBC News reported that China’s state media Xinhua had accused Google of having “intricate ties” to the US government. Xinhua went on to say that Google provides the US Intelligence Agencies with a record of its search results, also accusing it of trying to force differing US values onto Chinese society.

Today in the Telegraph there are accounts of articles and editorial pieces from “state controlled media” that accused the US of “information imperialism”. One commentary piece on Xinhua said:

“Whether (Google) leaves or not, the Chinese government will keep its Internet regulation principles unchanged,”

“One company's ambition to change China's Internet rules and legal system will only prove to be ridiculous.”

The China Post reports that the China Business News was reporting that it was possible that Google could make a public statement about its future in China as early as today.

This incredibly public war of words must be the cause of much concern for many people. For Google it seems to signal the Chinese authorities’ unwillingness to move on these central tenants of the internet strategy. For the international community it seems to convey the message that China’s censorship and restrictions on the free flow of news and information also shows no sign of evaporating.

We’ll keep our eyes peeled for possible statement from Google about its future in China and bring you that news as soon as we can.
