Ramsay’s Web Wire – Issue #5: Flash Gord-gone?

The internet has always been about pushing the boundaries, new technologies, free exchange of information and free tower defence games. Well, maybe not ‘always’ that last one but the point is that internet browsing is in a constant progression. This week we’ve looked into our crystal ball and seen the future of the web and I’ll tell ya, things are going to change. Could Flash be on the way out and will Google ever actually leave China?

You might have heard the term HTML 5 getting thrown around for a while. After all, it has been in development since 2004 and some experts working on the technology think that the final draft won’t be available until 2022. By that time in the future, Skynet will have surely gone self aware and decimated the human population anyway. Hey maybe the two are linked? In any case several browsers have already thrown their backing behind the technology with Internet Explorer 9 the latest to be announced as supporting various elements of HTML 5. The biggest talking point on the subject however, seems to be whether the complex capabilities of HTML 5 could begin to edge out Flash.

Elsewhere we got an exclusive glimpse into the future of AdWords via an interview with PPC expert Bryan Todd. Here Bryan gave us some insight into the current best practices in PPC campaigns as well as a look into what the future could hold for PPC advertising.

Without getting too bleak here, Wolfram Alpha gave a future insight of their own with a look into how greenhouse gases could affect global warming over time. Despite the depressing subject matter Wolfram Alpha manage to make it fun with calculated results based on government global warming statistics. Well, maybe not fun but hey saving the planets not supposed to be fun. In a final crystal ball reference, things have all gone a bit cloudy over whether Google will ever actually pull out of China. Apparently they’re now 99% sure of shutting down their China search engine, but knowing Google that 1% could keep them there for a while yet. In a step back in time we revisit our insight into why website owners should care about unique product descriptions.

In other news it’s all onwards and upwards as the big internet players keep building for the future. Per usual, Google steal the show with new features for Chrome, Reader Mobile and Google Wave for you to get your teeth into. They’ve also gone ahead and released a new Analytics Tracking Code to make tracking your website that little bit more efficient. Bing also appears to be in the ascendancy as Net Nielsen release the latest market share numbers.

With another week in the bag it’s time for me to hop into my time machine, hit 88 miles per hour and get another sneak peek into the future of the web. Great Scott!
