Can You Help Make Better Product Demos for Google?

OK are they just lazy? Well…maybe not lazy, maybe pretty clever really. On the back of some other smart promotions recently churned out by their Creative Lab, Google is now running a competition, (with no prize however) called Demo Slam which is challenging users to create their own demo videos for Google’s products and services, such as:

  • Google Goggles
  • Voice Search
  • Instant Search
  • Translate
  • Book Search
  • Universal Search
  • Chrome
  • Google Docs
  • Sky Map
  • Local Search
  • Realtime Search
  • Image Search
  • Google Maps
  • Background Image
  • Talk
  • Video Chat
  • Picasa
  • Google Earth
  • Product Search
  • Anything Else

The idea is that in order to escape from the often terribly boring tech demonstrations such as the ones which sit a couple of smartphones next to each other while some nerd commentates excitedly as they both struggle to load an image. Instead Google wants its tech savvy fans to come up with clever and funny ways to demonstrate their products. The competition will no doubt unearth some great videos but above all will provide Google with some nice word of mouth buzz about its products and services with minimal effort on its part.

Here are some of the videos already submitted:

If this has spiked your imagination and you want to make a video go to the Demo Slam page and click on the ‘Show the world what you can do’ button on the top right.

The idea for this endeavour probably came when Google realized how far some of its own tech demos have been banded around the net and since most people are a bunch of show-offs, they figured that with a bit of prodding we would be up for having a go ourselves. (Only if you are in the US though sadly…)

What would you do?
