iPad Guided Tours Show Glossy Promise

Look, I know it wasn’t exactly the launch that everyone thought it might be. There were a number of detractors – what about multitasking?! – it’s a big iphone with no phone?!?! – omgwthnocamera?!??!  etc. Well perhaps we can look on the almost-arrival of Apple’s iPad with a little perspective.

First of all – It looks really cool.

Arguably this was never in doubt, if there is one thing that Apple knows how to do is present the world’s shiniest and slickest products. Apple have recent added some “Guided Tours” of the iPad to their site, they run through 11 of the available apps – Safari, Mail, Photos, Videos, YouTube, iPod, iTunes, iBooks, Keynote, Pages and Numbers.

Each one of these Jobsian nuggets has been buffed to showroom shine, though its difficult not to be impressed with some of the features available. The inclusion of applications like Numbers – the spreadsheet application – shows this not just all wizz-bang visual treats, the iPad is also a tool for substantive work.

The videos make repeated reference to the onscreen keyboard, it does indeed look roughly the size of a notebook keyboard but I’m still a little hesitant. A flat surface will seemingly always be short of that tactile response that a traditional keyboard provides, I’ll look forward to being proven wrong!

Can It Help Newspapers?

With the recent news of some high profile newspapers rolling up their freebie drawbridges to secure themselves behind a payment moat (nice analogy, I know) could iPad help in this new not-everything-is-free look of information on the web. It would seem that part of the problem with newspapers asking for subscription fees is that they have become just another news outlet, you don’t have that physical newspaper in your hands any more. It doesn’t seem beyond the realms of possibility that some of these newspapers will try and get themselves involved in the content delivery systems that service the iPad. Surely people are much more likely to buy a subscription though a service like iTunes or the iBook store than from a normal website. Throw in a few sudokus and surely you’d effectively have your own money printing machine!
