Google Music Looks Set to Take on Apple iTunes

Rivalries

Chrome vs. Safari, Android vs. iPhone, Adwords vs. iAds, it’s a constant competition between the two giants of Google and Apple. As two of the biggest players in technology and internet services it stands to reason that they would rival each other in most areas. What’s wrong with a bit of friendly competition anyway? Well, Apple may be unhappy to hear rumours that Google are planning to take on their iTunes service.

iTunes

One of Apples crowning glories is the iTunes service which has blossomed as shoppers have learned to trust music downloads and started migrating their music purchasing to the web. As a result iTunes has reached a level of success which has established it as a way to measure the success and chart rankings of the latest singles and albums. With downloads from this store in at least the 100’s of millions, who could possibly compete in this market? Google, that’s who.

Enter Google Music

Rumours are circulating that Google are looking to release their own alternative to iTunes, possibly called ‘Google Music’. I know, not very creative but the title as well as the service could be a work in progress as sources on CNET suggest that this music service could be with us as early as this autumn.

With a variety of music industry sources as well as a demonstration of a web-based iTunes competitor at this year’s I/O conference, there is certainly plenty of reason to believe that this service is well underway. But what will it offer that iTunes doesn’t? Surely they can’t simply rely on people’s personal biases of Google over Apple?

One area where they’re certain to get some backing is from the music industry. Rumours are already circulating that the music industry is involved (probably dealing with legal hurdles) and top labels would no doubt welcome competition to Apples near monopoly of the online market.

What can Google Music Offer?

So what kind of service will Google Music be? Will it provide the same range as iTunes, from music to movies to educational materials? It seems likely that Google will attempt to compete with Apple quite comprehensively in all quarters with the major factor being that they can offer competitive prices to try and steal away iTunes customers. Also, will the Google service require you to download the application in the same way as iTunes' store, which integrates your iTunes folder with access to the store?

What seems most likely is that this service will be pioneered by Android phones which are already making a dent in Apple iPhone’s share of the American market. iTunes relies on iPhone and iPod users to maintain their downloads so if Google can provide an alternative service built into the expansive variety of Android phones then they can certainly start to draw potential customers away from iTunes. Only time will tell if Google Music becomes a number 1 hit, or just gets lost in production.

  • Interesting idea, but I see it being about as successful as Google Buzz’s competition with Twitter or Google Voice’s competition with Skype. In terms of innovation, design, and user friendly interface, Google just can’t keep up. They’re always a step behind Apple. Granted, they make a solid product, but by the time they finish plagiarizing one of Apple’s ideas, Apple already has market control (coughANDROIDcough).
