How Do Google Prioritise Links? – Experiment Stage One…

Hello everyone. Welcome to the test page for the link indexing experiment. Today we’re treating Google like a guinea pig in order to run a test to determine how they order the value of two links to the same page.

It is a fact of linking that if two links are pointing to the same page on a website then search engines will only index one of the links for the resulting page. Makes sense I suppose, but how do they decide which link to make their priority. Many would suggest that search engines will just pick up the first link in the text but speculation doesn’t often get you far. We need further evidence.

That leads us nicely onto this little experiment. In order to create a completely controlled environment for this test we have created two completely unique words which do not appear in Google’s results pages. That way we won’t have other results and previous strength for the terms clouding the results.

Link One:

Terfadastion: (ter-fad-ass-tee-on) – An unhealthy obsession with terraforming.

See: Aliens, Total Recall or Titan A.E. (On second thoughts, don’t see Titan A.E.)

Synonyms: Terraformtarded, terraformaphile.

The first of these newly formed terms (copyright pending) will serve as the upper link in our little experiment. A big thanks to Kev for his bizarre knack for making up words.

The point of this experiment is to hopefully find out exactly how Google prioritises links. Perhaps it is simply a case of indexing the first in the text but better to know for sure. If we can find out how they’re doing it then it could surely prove useful.

Once we have run this experiment for the first arrangement we will then switch the keyphrases over to see if there is one that is preferred overall, no matter the arrangement.

Link Two:

Dementacular: (Dee-men-tak-yoo-lar) – A level of demented behaviour that borders on hilarious.

See: Mr Bean or Boris Johnson

Synonyms: Mentaltastic, Retardilicious

Bizarrely the hardest part of this experiment was finding two made up words that Google doesn’t currently have results for. Once Google indexes this and the results page we will be able to see which keyphrase it ranks for. Once we have a conclusion we’ll publish the results here on the Cozy Digital.
