Ramsay’s Web Wire – Issue #24: Googleman and the AdWords Myths

What’s that in the sky? Is it a bird, is it a plane? No its Google man! Here to save us from poor rankings and to dispel false SEO and AdWords rumours. Maybe a slight exaggeration there, Google isn’t always the superhero we’re purporting here as they quite often turn out to be the villain; abusing user data or stealing information via their streetcar batmobiles for instance. So what about this week? Is it a case of Goodgle or BAdWords?

First off, after giving business owners the means to get a free Google Places listing, they’ve now set up a Moderator page so that people can post their questions on using the service. Now you have the resources to optimise your Places Listing quickly and easily.

Another update is to Google’s Webmaster Tools. This essential little service can give you plenty of information on how your websites ticking along with info on speed, unique tags and crawl errors. Well now, to make things even easier, the service can be setup to inform you instantly by email if there’s a spike in crawl errors with a short message probably to the tone of: “Yo, your site is messed up dog!” or for the non-rappers “My Googness old chap! It seems your site is jolly well kerplunked!”

Google also dispelled a variety of AdWords myths this week with a rundown of some of the most frequently brought up allegories. To put it bluntly: AdWords won’t affect organic search results, AdWords isn’t responsible if your credit card is declined and if you keep playing with it, it will fall off and you will go blind. Everybody clear?

Next up, where would Google Man be without his loyal sidekick, Matt ‘the boy wonder’ Cutts? “Jimmini Jillikers Google Man! Is that a Nofollow Link?” Matt takes us on a mission into Speed Cloaking, Nofollow internal links and browser dependant Google SERPs. He also tells us about his secret life of dressing up in a mask and tights at night…oh, and being a super hero too.

Finally for Google, they’re gearing up to take on the might of Facebook. You may know Facebook as the evil organisation who use their mind control software to turn people into mindless zombies. Well Google could be looking to do the same with 'Google Me' and while it’s still all very much under the radar, rumours suggest that it’s going to be geared towards games.

Also this week, vBulletin a provider of online discussion software certainly wasn’t vBulletproof as a flaw in their software left them vulnerable to hack attacking. Finally from us this week, find out how to improve your website structure and URLs to fine tune it for SEO. We give you this stuff because we’re one of the good guys, like the Flash. (Not to be confused with the Flasher. Totally different super power).
