Twitter Hits 50 Million

Remember life before twitter? Ah, a simpler time. We didn’t have access to every waking thought from a plethora of people, no one knew that Stephen Fry could amass an online army of 1.3 million followers, and that 140 characters could become so important.

Twitter posted on their blog yesterday that they had actually reached the heady heights of 50 million tweets per day, that’s a semi-worrying 600 tweets per second. In 2007 there were just 5000 tweets per day, that had grown to 300 000 by 2008, and to 2.5 million by 2009.

The continued success of this micro blogging site must in some part be down to the fairly recent inclusion of social media sites in search results from sites like Google, so called ‘real-time’ search.. In fact Digital Beat posted recently that visitors to Twitter actually increased by 9% from December 2009 to January 2010.

With more and more traditional media outlets choosing to interact with their audiences via Twitter it is difficult to see this mini-blogging disappearing overnight. However, like every social networking site it is susceptible to being replaced by the next-big-thing, Twitter needs to evolve to stop itself seeming stale.
