Twitter Redesigned & Revamped – Details Here

Twitter has for the length of its existence been somewhat slow at making any major changes to its services. But now all of a sudden they have made a bunch of changes all at once. It seems the goal is to try and keep us on the site longer by providing embedded media on site. This rather cheerful video gives you an idea of the direction they are going:

If that’s not enough to whet your appetite here is a few more details from Twitter’s blog:

  • New design - The site has a cleaner timeline and a rich details pane that instantly adds more impact to individual Tweets while still maintaining the simplicity of the timeline. Also, experience infinite scroll — you no longer have to click “more” to view additional Tweets.
  • Media - Now, it’s easy to see embedded photos and videos directly on Twitter, thanks to partnerships with DailyBooth, DeviantART, Etsy, Flickr, Justin.TV, Kickstarter, Kiva, Photozou, Plixi, Twitgoo, TwitPic, TwitVid, USTREAM, Vimeo, yfrog, and YouTube.
  • Related content - When you click a Tweet, the details pane shows additional information related to the author or subject. Depending on the Tweet’s content, you may see: replies, other Tweets by that user, a map of where a geotagged Tweet was sent from, and more.
  • Mini profiles - Click a username to see a mini profile without navigating from the page, which provides quick access to account information, including bio and recent Tweets.

For now, Twitter say, there will only be a few accounts able to access the new services. Over the next few weeks more and more accounts will be able to give it a try and be able to switch back and forth between old and new styles to make sure everyone is able to make the transition happily.

It seems that with this overhaul Twitter are making the step of going beyond the Tweet. By this I mean that the site is now less focused on the act of Tweeting and more on the absorption of more Tweets by anyone who wants to read them. The fact that ‘Tweeting’ and ‘Twitter’ have become everyday words show that people know about this Twitter malarkey and want to know what ‘all the Tweet’ is about. Not all these people will want to sit around thinking up witty and compelling Tweets all day so Twitter has provided ways to create content with which to snare even the shyest of visitors. Twitter is now more useful as a way to capture news, information and other interesting or exciting content faster than any other source.

The question is: have Twitter made a mistake by turning their back on their simplistic routes which made them popular in the first place?
