Apple OS X 10.6.4 Update Released

OS X 10.6.4

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Apple, having already launched the iPhone 4 at WWDC10, to much excitement. Now they have let loose a more fundamental release for Mac users everywhere in the shape of OS X 10.6.4, the latest update to OS X for Snow Leopard users. As with all operating systems it is advisable to always have your software as up to date as possible as most releases include some sort of security update, and OS X 10.6.4 is no exception. This security update covers issues involving CUPS, DesktopServices, Flash Player plug-in and Folder Manager. (For details check out Apple’s full explanation.)

Safari 5.0 and HTML5

One of the most interesting things about the Safari Update is that it has improved HTML5 support. HTML5 (as we wrote about a week ago) according to Steve Jobs is going to change the functionality of the internet for the better and in the process help elbow out buggy software. In SEO news Safari 5.0 will now include, in addition to Yahoo and Google search boxes, Bing too. Great.

Apple lists what’s included:

General fixes and improvements

  • improves compatibility with some Braille displays
  • resolves an issue that causes the keyboard or trackpad to become unresponsive
  • resolves an issue that may prevent some Adobe Creative Suite 3 applications from opening
  • addresses issues copying, renaming, or deleting files on SMB file servers
  • improves reliability of VPN connections
  • resolves a playback issue in DVD Player when using Good Quality deinterlacing
  • resolves an issue editing photos with iPhoto or Aperture in full screen view
  • resolves an issue with Parental Controls Time Limits for Open Directory or Active Directory users
  • resolves a display sleep issue with MacBook Pro (Early 2010) computers
  • resolves an issue with MacBook Pro (Early 2010) computers in which the right speaker may sound louder than the left speaker
  • includes Safari 5.0
  • Security improvements

Fixes and improvements for Aperture 3

  • adds tethered shooting support for additional digital camera models
  • addresses IPTC metadata compatibility issues

Fixes and improvements for external devices

  • RAW image compatibility for additional digital cameras
  • resolves an issue with using third-party USB web cameras
  • resolves an issue with noise when using some third-party FireWire audio devices
  • resolves pairing issues with Apple remotes

Apple recommends that you back up your system before installing the update. It is also advisable to run Software Update more than once to make sure you get all updates available. Separate updates will be released for servers and for the new improved Mac mini, which was released yesterday and a server version for the Mac mini too.

What do you think of the update? Are you suprised how few items seem to be listed for such a big update (315MB when updating from OSX 10.6.3)? Or is the devil in the detail?
