Awesome New Google Analytics Feature – Weighted Sort

Spend a lot of time staring at data in Google Analytics trying to decide what is important enough to spend time looking at and what is just noise? Not an easy job, I know.

Something as simple as looking at Keyword Bounce Rate can require you to assess vast acres of data to decide what is worth addressing – simply sorting the keywords by descending Bounce Rate will often just fill your screen with hundreds of 'single visit' keyphrases.

The Weighted Sort Solution

Well Google want to put a stop to this aimless trawling through data with an unassuming checkbox marked 'Weighted Sort'.

This nice little piece of ui transforms the landscape of the data you are looking at. Go try it now and be amazed! Click on your Traffic Sources – Keywords in Analytics and then sort by Bounce Rate. A small check-box 'Weighted Sort' will appear along the top of the table, enable this and witness the startling magic! It basically sorts the data not only by the Bounce Rate, but also by what one Analytics Evangelist has deemed 'interestingness'.

You are left with a table of not only the keywords that have the highest bounce rate but that also are the most likely to positively impact the ROI of your business by addressing them.

Want to know how it works? Analytics Evangelist Avinash Kaushik has a great blog post detailing the need for this awesome new feature, how it works and even some of the maths behind it! (Don't all rush at once ;) ).

More info can be found on the Google Analytics blog.

If you are still reading this and haven’t tried it then spend the next couple of minutes marvelling at how this simple check-box could make a huge difference to your day!
