Google Says Sorry…so it’s OK to Watch Web Analytics TV#13

Despite admitting that they are in fact evil Sith Lords in disguise as Jedi Knights, the news that they have admitted that they did bad will go some way to admonishing them for their ‘careless error’. Google has now held up its hands and said sorry for carelessly (but illegally) collecting the emails, URLs and even passwords while trawling round the country with its Street View cars. Google’s Senior Vice President or Engineering and Research, Alan Eustace, explain in a blog post that they have been looking at their internal processes and have come up with 3 changes which should help us to trust them again:

  1. They have appointed Alma Whitten as Director of Privacy. She is a really clever and experienced computer privacy expert with an international reputation, as well as a 57 character password on her Gmail account.
  2. Google is boosting its training for all staff on the topics of information security awareness, privacy and responsible collection. Every member of staff will also now have their own lawyer to look over their shoulder at all times.
  3. They have added an extra layer of checks for their engineering project leaders so that there is an easier way for managers and an audit team to check how user data is being handled. Google Robotics division funding has now been boosted so their first set of robot staff can be up and running before any more human error takes place.

Phew…now that all that nastiness is behind us and we are all happy that Google is no longer evil, you  can sit back, relax and enjoy a nice 19 minutes and 15 seconds of Analytics TV with Avinash and Nick. Look out for their choreographed Judo Chop!
