Bing gets New Social Search Skills with Bing.com/social

Bing Senior Vice President Yusuf Mehdi yesterday announced the launch of Microsoft Bing’s new social search results section, at the SMX Advanced search conference in Seattle. The beta of this new social service went live this morning and offers you the chance to search within Twitter and Facebook trending topics and see (almost) real time updates on your search topic as people comment. Pretty cool.

Read more on the highlights at bing’s blog.

Basically, say you search for ‘iPhone 4’, as many people are right now, you will be presented with vertical results in 2 categories:

Public Updates

This has the 3 latest public posts from Twitter or Facebook fan pages, constantly updated scrolling down as it is updated. The result shows the user name, the post, where the post came from and when it was posted. You can also ‘pause’ the scrolling results and restart them, and choose to share the tweet on Twitter.com.

Shared Links

This section shows ‘aggregate shared link data for non-fan pages’. This means that the results are drawn from Twitter or shared links on Facebook fan pages for people who have their privacy status set to ‘everyone’. None of your personal info, picture or even the text are included in the results from Facebook, only the link. The results show the same information as in the ‘Public Updates’ section above only they are headed with the title of the page which the post is linked to. Again, pretty cool.

Homepage

The homepage shows the ‘Hottest Social Topics’ up to the minute, which at the time of writing included ‘background image’, ‘World Cup’, ‘South Africa’, and ‘Karate Kid’. When you select ‘World Cup’ it gives you a nice picture of the world cup itself, a brief explanation of what it is and, in this case, when it starts. It lists the ‘top shared links’, ‘recent public updates’, lets you search for terms ‘within this topic’ for particular ‘people’ and ‘keywords’.

Mehdi no doubt hopes that this new feature will help to differentiate Bing from its competitors. We shall see…

Here is Yusuf demonstrating the features at SMX Advanced search conference:
