Festive Facebookers Buck Googles Dominance

Well here we are back again to the daily grind although not without Christmas and New Year still vivid in our minds. On Christmas day most of us will have gotten up to the usual traditions. Exchanging presents, pulling crackers, eating too much food and having a few drinks. There are a variety of activities that come into their own at Christmas time. However, there appears to have been a new extremely popular activity that took place this Christmas.

It seems that in the absence of peoples usual social groups over Christmas, people flocked to social networking site Facebook. As a result, Christmas was the only day last year on which another site trumped Google for the most visits in the U.S. Facebook further bucked the trend by landing top of the polls on New Year’s day according to Hitwise research. Perhaps most of the New Year visits can be put down to a surge in seasonal well wishing.

Either way it’s apparent that social networking sites are taking an increasingly large share of internet traffic and look set to continue their growth this year.

The Hitwise website provides more information on Google v. Facebook trends as well as the top ten U.S. search terms for 2009.
