Google’s Guiding Principles

Data Privacy is a hot topic these days, with more and more people not only shopping but also using social networking sites, the spotlight has been shone on how that data is being collected and stored. Be honest, do you know who is collecting data about you as you browse the web?

As I’m sure we were all aware, yesterday was Data Privacy Day. To mark this occasion Google released information about its guiding ‘Privacy Principles’:

  1. Use information to provide our users with valuable products and services
  2. Develop products that reflect strong privacy standards and practices.
  3. Make the collection of personal information transparent.
  4. Give users meaningful choices to protect their privacy.
  5. Be a responsible steward of the information we hold.

There is also a video going into further detail about these principles:

It’s worth keeping in mind data security when you are online, does that site really need your home address? Should I really put personal details on social media sites? Making informed choices can help people keep their data safe in this online age.

..More information can be found on Google’s Official Blog and the Data Privacy Day site
