New Firefox Build on the Way

Over the course of this week end Mozilla where putting some of the final tweaks to their new 3.6 version of Firefox. With things seeming to run smoothly in the transition to the new build it looks likely that the new version could be up and running before the end of this month.

Mozilla announced recently that of the thousands of Firefox add-ons available, over 75% have been upgraded to be compatible with the new release, and a further 100 bugs have been patched in the latest test version of the browser built on the Gecko 1.9.2 platform.

While it seems clear that this is more of a step up process rather than a full upgrade, Mozilla seem confident in the expansions and improvements that it will offer. They drew a great deal of attention to the improvements in Javascript performance as well as the method by which third party software bolts on to Firefox. This bolt-on update will apparently make the browser more secure. It also comes loaded with a variety of personas allowing the user to tailor the look of Firefox with a single click.

Furthermore the new version offers support for the WOFF font format as well as a variety of web technologies such as HTML 5, CSS and DOM. It also provides built in options for full screen open, native video and poster frames.

However some Firefox users seem to be turning on Mozilla with suggestions that Firefox has moved too far from its simple roots and is becoming something of a bloated shadow of its former self. It remains to be seen how the new version pans out.
