Ramsay’s Web Wire – Issue #22: China, Google and Pachyderms?

Google, Google, Google, that’s all I ever hear about. You would think that they owned the web like some huge totalitarian overlord. Actually I heard a rumour that they’re working on an app for that called ‘Google Stalin’. Alright, I might have made that up. There are no owners of the web, but if there were, Google would certainly be a major shareholder.

This week, Google was in the headlines as they managed to get their licence to operate in china renewed. It’s been a bit of a fiasco with some dubiousness surrounding what the major deal was. Something to do with Google saying China never listens, China saying Google doesn’t respect their feelings and possibly Chinese ninja hackers trying to take down Google. Blah, blah, blah. We were at least hoping for some kind of blow out but it appears that this odd couple are going steady again.

Elsewhere, Eric Schmidt was quoted in the Wall Street Journal stating that Google Ads were going to have to be more creative and interactive in the future. This mind-bending epiphany was stumbled upon in a meeting between some of the world’s major media players, including Schmidt himself, Mark Zuckerman of Facebook fame, Bob Iger of Disney, He-man and Cringer, Top Cat and two of the most media savvy Mysterons.

Also from Google we looked once again into the Google Goggles app. This time it’s a little controversial with facial recognition back on the agenda. I wonder if it’ll be able to tell the difference between Mickey Rourke’s face and a Picasso painting. If you’re not happy with the apps available, then why not create one of your own with the Android App Inventor.

As we’re a curious bunch, we wanted to find out the top map application on the web from Google, Bing and Yahoo. In our initial tests we blindfolded three employees, took them to a random location and charged them with the task of finding their way back to the office using one of the map applications provided. Our thoughts are with their families. So instead of losing more men to the task we did an in-house maps review. Enjoy.

We also looked into how the Print Friendly tool can help you save money, time and the environment and asked the question ‘why is Google like an SEO elephant?’ Answers on a postcard to the usual address.
