Unlock Keyword Secrets in Google AdWords

As the song says, keywords make the world go round, or at least that’s my recollection. For anyone using AdWords to advertise their business online, especially using a pay per click service such as Google AdWords, keywords need to be the cornerstone of your campaign.

Google LogoThe Inside AdWords blog has posted a video with a number of tips on selecting your AdWords keywords:

  • Use your product names to generate keywords, include information such as product names and details. You’ll also want to use plurals and any common words people might use to search for your products. Do this separately for each product you intend to sell.
  • Once you have your list its time to remove any that might be too generic – so if you were selling cars online you would remove keywords such as “car” and “cars” as they are simply too wide ranging. In addition you’ll want to use keywords where people are more likely to be looking for a product, so a search for “car” could easily be someone looking for information – another reason to drop that keywords.
  • Finally, you can use negative keywords to fine-tune your campaign, they allow you to define keywords where you don’t want your ads to show. If you sell cars online but don’t sell particular brands then place those brand names in your negative keywords. Similarly if you don’t offer car servicing then you could also put that in your negative keywords.
