Will Exclusive Content Strengthen Bing against Google?

Seismic shocks rippled through the online world yesterday, the owner of some of the web’s most respected and well known news sites could be seeking removal from perhaps the world’s most popular search engine, Google.

Rupert Murdoch has been looking for a solution to the online news problem for a while – online visitors to News Corp. sites, such as the Wall Street Journal, simply don’t deliver significant enough revenue to make up for losses in newspaper sales. A number of different models have been suggested over the years; from moving exclusively to subscription-only content from News Corp. sites, to allowing people to view a number of news stories over a period of time before asking for a subscription.

Now it looks like Microsoft might be at least part of the answer for News Corps – a deal to allow Bing exclusive access to News Corp. sites would provide significant revenue to Rupert Murdock’s global business. At the same time these famous news websites would be ‘de-indexed’ by Google, effectively stopping Google from delivering links to within those news sites.

For Microsoft this looks like a win-win situation. Exclusive content could be a huge tool in their fight with Google’s dominance of web search. Even if this deal were to not come to fruition, their Bing search engine is being discussed all over the web, not to mention on TV and Radio. With this news story, Microsoft is already ‘getting the word out’ about Bing.

All this presents a number of questions about how this will affect the world of online search. Will exclusive content actually change people’s search habits? Would the average internet searcher change their search engine due to the possibility that specific sites might not be included in the results? That remains to be seen.
