Interested in global warming issues? Yes. How about computational knowledge engines? Really? Well then you’re going to love this little feature from Wolfram Alpha which gives you the best of both worlds.
Ever renowned for providing a clever variation on the search engine Wolfram Alpha aren’t set to rest on their laurels as they get some figures from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2007 report allowing them to give a detailed insight into the addition to global warming made by the various greenhouse gases.
With Earth Hour coming around soon this month, this is the ideal time for this little feature to rear its head. To find out the effect that gases such as methane will have to our environment over a 20, 100 and 500 year period (not too worried about the latter ones myself) then simply head to Wolfram Alpha and search ‘gwp of methane’ (Global Warming Potential).This will return the long and short term contribution that this gas will made to harming our atmosphere. Fun stuff! You can also select the show comparisons button to compare it with the effects of other green housegases on the planet.
Although it’s not the most positive stuff, it gives a striking insight into what is an important issue with the use of some pretty handy statistics and calculations.
