Yahoo Score First in World Cup 2010 Coverage

Well the football leagues are over for another year with the SPL league wrapped up weeks ago and Chelsea taking the English title on the last day of the season. Fortunately, this is one of those magic years where the greatest sporting event on earth (don’t get me started on the Superbowl) the World Cup takes over. Of course with many of us working the old 9 to 5 you can’t catch every match. Fortunately, Yahoo in true footballing spirit are adding some new footy features to their results.

Getting the jump on the other search engines, Yahoo are gearing up to provide a selection of shortcuts to keep you in touch with all the World Cup news even if you’re stuck in the office. From the moment the first game kicks off, Yahoo will launch the short cuts on their search engine that give you schedules and scores for specific teams and matches. All you have to do is search by country group or match and you’ll be returned with all the info you could want, directly in the search results. You can get a peek at how the tables will look via the Yahoo! Search Blog now.

However the most exciting part of their coverage is the Yahoo! Toolbar which I will personally be installing now. Not only does it let you dress your browser in the colours of the team you’ll be supporting; (I’m currently torn between Algeria and the USA for no obvious reason,) it will also allow you to follow all the latest news and perform quick searches for teams or players. When everything finally kicks off it will also provide you with previews, live scores, post game wrap-ups and live headlines instantly in your browser. This might seem like an ad for Yahoo!, but as the only major search engine bringing the world cup closer to you they’ve got my vote, for now.

However, with little news coming out of the Google and Bing camps, it leads me to suspect they might be closet rugby fans.
