Ramsay’s Web Wire – Issue #17: Google Gets World Cup Fever

Well, the countdown to the World Cup is finally over with Mexico and South Africa kicking off the celebrations later today. But even with the main event taking over, the internet stops for no man and neither does SEO. But there’s no reason the World Cup and Internet news can’t go hand in hand. After all they have so much in common, like umm…

Ok maybe any link between the two would be as tedious as counting holes in a goal net, but I’m going to take a bash at it anyway.

First up, Google have my back with football stadium street view in Google maps. Already today I’ve taken a wander around the Soccer City stadium and wandered across the hallowed turf on which the world cup final will be played. Maybe in four years time Google will have perfected live streaming stadium view. One can dream.

Another intensely anticipated event was the wait for the unveiling of the iPhone 4. Apple fanatics waited with baited breath (and just a faint hint of arousal) for Apples new wonder-gadget to greet them. By the look of this new masterpiece of technology, the 3G and 3GS will be relegated to the bench due to a lack of ability.

Bing, the Ronaldinho of the Search Engine World (Good Performance, but ugly as sin) has been getting social with a new social search results section so you can keep up to date with all of the world cups going on from tweets to FaceBook updates.

Google, like a tough manager, have changed their player selections (sorry) indexing with the roll-out of Caffeine. The new alteration will change how Google evaluates what is on the pages they crawl, index and return to users when they perform a search. Also this week, Google’s All Star spam team provide some pretty hefty insight into improving your websites SEO with a look at the performance of a variety of websites. However, the Search Giant is also in a bit more trouble over the street car WiFi mess from Privacy International.

It also looks like search engines have been relegated to the reserves as social networking sites take pole position according to Hitwise. However, that’s not taking into account the greater numbers of social networking sites compared to search engines. So while social networking sites are on top, they’ve clearly got a couple of extra men on the pitch.

One player with plenty of future potential is HTML5. Showcased by apple this week, the evolving technology looks set to put flash into early retirement. At least that’s that Apple seems to think.

That’s it from Web Wire for another week, and that's clearly enough of football parallels. I think I’ve got to cut out these references now. I’ll go take a seat in the dugout.
