Yahoo: Viewer Discretion is Advised

Carol Bartz, CEO of search giant Yahoo, who took over last January was hired because of her extensive experience as a technology executive and her no nonsense approach. But since she took charge she has been making some changes which have turned many heads. Changing some of the company’s core focus is not something a new head will be thanked for, and on the back of an attempted takeover by Microsoft and serious advertising revenue shortages you would think she would consider keeping her head down and trying to keep what they have safe.

While at Yahoo Investor Day 2010 Carol Bartz seems to have done just that and even improved the company’s stock percentages. Her announcement that Yahoo intends to update its search engine in October is at last a positive move by Yahoo to try and take back some ground from Google, who are currently leaving Yahoo in their dust. Yahoo particularly lags behind Google in the realms of video and images etc so we can but hope that the update will provide something of a spruce up. Any positive push for Yahoo in these heady times can only be a good thing – let’s hope for their sake they don’t go and mess it up by saying something silly.

TechCrunch Disrupt was a conference which finished yesterday in New York and involved:

“A high-level look at societal changes in how we consume and share information, and why. The following days will focus on how these changes are influencing platform development and business strategy in media, advertising and technology.“

As part of this conference, Carol Bartz was invited to have a ‘fireside chat,’ in front of many tech entrepreneurs and writers which was streamed live, with Silicon Valley blogger Michael Arrington. The conversation is interesting to say the least. Arrington really gets under her skin and certainly gets a reaction from the ‘no nonsense’ Bartz.

Viewer discretion is advised (contains swearing.)

While Yahoo is still one of the most visited sites on the net, it faces increasing constantly changing challenges from all sides. I wonder if Carol Bartz can keep her cool?
