Google Ups Response to Haiti Earthquake Appeal

As the tragic events of the Haiti earthquake continue to unfold, the need for humanitarian aid is becoming more and more obvious. With this in mind, Google have weighed in with many of the aid organisations to attempt to bring some relief to the struggling nation in a variety of ways. By providing aid of their own and promoting the efforts in a variety of ways it is hoped that they can make a difference.

In order to help the people of Haiti Google is donating $1 million to organisations on the ground delivering aid in Haiti. Their donations are going toward rescuing people still trapped as well as providing clean water, medical care and support. However their efforts do not stop there. Google have set out to really promote the aid effort by making it easier for everyone else to respond to the tragedy. They have provided a link on the Google Homepage to information, resources and ways you can help. This link also provides information on how you can donate to many of the aid organisations working in Haiti.

They have also been using YouTube to assist their movement. A spotlight on the YouTube homepage and a ticker across the site will direct users to charity videos such as Oxfam and the Red Cross providing further information on how you can donate.

In addition the Google team is working with U.N. organisations and Map Makers to provide on the ground updates of the maps of Haiti as well as plans to publish up to date satellite imagery of the country for use by relief organisations. One of Google’s partners GeoEye have already begun providing post earthquake imagery.
