Microsoft Advertising Exec Goes A(w)OL

Alex Gounares has long been a big part of the Microsoft team and major player in the giants advertising products. Advertising is a major part of Microsoft’s profitability, and with fingers in so many pies Gounares worked on advertising products in search, display, video, gaming and mobile advertising as well as tools for advertising and publishing. As the corporate vice president of advertising research and development Gounares is a big part of Microsoft’s future. Or at least he was until it was leaked that he’s on his way to AOL.

According to announcements within Microsoft at the tail end of last week, Gounares has left the company to take up the position of CTO (chief technical officer) at AOL. It must surely come as a blow to Microsoft who have had the services of the man since 1993 who has risen through their ranks, worked on a variety of big projects and even served as the technology assistant to the company chairman Bill Gates.

As well as leading Microsoft’s multi-billion dollar advertising business he was in charge of developing their tablet PC operating system including digital ink and pen technologies. What seems most compelling about this move is that it comes at a potentially bad time for Microsoft. With the impending culmination of the Microsoft-Yahoo deal fast approaching it seems a very unfortunate time to lose your head of advertising. Or could it be the case that this has been a casualty of this advertising integration? Either way it’s an interesting note as Microsoft continues to make big pushes in its marketing and advertising strategies.
