Staying Live – Google’s New As-It-Happens Search Results

Google has just presented another Cozy Digital and refinement to the way it reports search results to its users.

Announced yesterday on Google Blog, though not yet available to all searchers, Google is including recently posted information from sites such as Twitter and Google News within the search results. This could be seen as a huge step forward and elevation of social media sites as a source of information, now citizen discussion and journalism is being used to power search results.

The inclusion of this new stream of information comes in the form of a new ‘Latest Results’ area of the page. This real-time scrolling section updates with new information received from a list of sources such as Twitter, Jaiku, Identi.ca, FriendFeed,  MySpace and Facebook.

If the user inputs search term, say the name of a recently released film, then the search results will not only provide links to established review and promotion sites, but now also include relevant results from recently updated sites such as social media. This has the possibility to partly side-step traditional news and review sites, the user could be presented with information before the ‘big name’ sites have had chance to update.

This is certainly an exciting step forward for traditional search, live results are keeping Google in-tune with the social media revolution.
