Google See through Windows

As a major change to their business, Google have started phasing out their internal use of Microsoft Windows operating system. The whole move has come about due to Google’s assertions that MS Windows simply isn’t secure enough.

It comes as little surprise that Google have taken this move, as the directive to do so began back in January as a response to security issues which arose in their Chinese operations. It was widely documented at the time that Google where victim to several hacking attacks in China and much of the blame was placed on the frailties of several aspects of Microsoft’s systems. This seems to have been the catalyst for change as Google, who employ more than 10,000 workers internationally, are making the transition to alternatives, predominately Mac OS.

The competitive wedge which nestles between Microsoft and Google has been highlighted as a possible reason for this transition as Google look to pay less in software licenses to a main competitor. Furthermore this constitutes a great opportunity to damage the reputation of Microsoft in an off the cuff manner. However, Mac OS is of course the property of another major competitor in Apple, so is this the real reason for the change?

The interesting point to note is that there is little talk of any adoption of the Chrome OS, Google’s own brand of operating system. Much of this might boil down to the fact that as of yet the Chrome OS isn’t capable of being utilised as a development machine. In the mean time it seems likely that, as opposed to being a slight at a competitor, this is actually a genuine attempt to reinforce security measures by moving away from a system renowned for weaknesses, to one which prides itself on its better security.
