Ramsay’s Web Wire – Issue #13: G-Man and the Masters of the Internet

You come here for the latest internet news and that’s what we give you. No questions asked. It’s a big ol’ internet so there are usually a few things going on, and this week the big search engine providers Google, Microsoft and Yahoo as well as Apple and even Twitter have all had news coming out of their respective camps.

First up is Google, who as always are feverishly working on some new features to their services on the web as well as even getting away from the computer for a bit, to gear up for this year’s I/O conference. As ever they’ve also been adding some new features to AdWords and even re-jigged Google Wave. They’re good like that.

Elsewhere, the 'G-men' as they will hence-forth be known, got hold of Conon O’Brien for an interview. It’s worth a look as Vice President of Engineering at Google, Vic Gundotra, (not a villain from Thundercats,) gets quite impressively out of his depth while sat alongside the comical ginger funny man.

On a more serious side of things, Google’s Android is going on a bit of a rampage, as it crashes Apple’s party state-side. Android phones are on the up, surpassing iPhone recently. Android are also likely to be part of a potential rival release to iPad and combined with the fact that the iPad has received some not so positive reviews, Apple owner Steve Jobs must be getting iRate…ahem.

Anyway, elsewhere thing’s weren’t so great for Twitter either, as the socially inept found a new way to get friends. Force them! Due to a bug in Twitter's system there was a way to force anyone you wanted to follow you. Assuming that you can't actually get friends for being smart – at least you could temporarily.

While on the topic of social networking, Google and Yahoo apparently like good discussion. Sure they’ve both been working on their social networking like Buzz and er, Buzz but it feels like they’re both a little late to the party. They’re like two older men who claim to like bands like the arctic monkey’s to sound cool. Yup, Google and Yahoo are the Gordon Browns of social networking.

Of course they’re not all bad at Yahoo. At least it shows interest in something cool with some quite handy World Cup shortcuts and a supporter toolbar. With Google however it’s more bad news as webmasters ask: ‘are Google becoming the next Microsoft?’ Obviously the opinion of Microsoft isn’t very high among webmasters with speculation that they might spend time lurking under bridges or luring children into their gingerbread house.
