Ramsay’s Web Wire – Issue #32: Fear and Googling in Las Vegas

Some of you may have noticed a slight deficiency of Web Wireyness last week so for those who didn’t get their RWA (Recommended Webby Allowance) I apologise. Some may have led you to believe that this absence was due to illness, which is lies, Damned Lies! While I can’t tell you what really happened I will tell you this: Tequila and Peruvian hallucinogens should not be mixed. I feel a lot better but the curtains are still giving me bad mortgage advice.

So back to business and we’re going to be hitting you with a double wammy of news from the past fortnight! Like a fat chick with a stack of pies: you’re heading for a cardiac arrest… of news! And what’s up first? Why it’s Google of course. The never-ending saga that is Google’s updates rumbles on much like that never-ending film: The Thin Pretentious Red Line. Anyway, one of these updates was to Google Chrome which is looking at becoming faster and more powerful with new updated functionality which will use your processor to power its capabilities meaning faster cooler internet. While still in testing, these updates looks set to make IE9 look like a browser made by infants or Steve Ballmer.

Next week (Monday the 4th to be exact. Google are launching the Adwords Train to Gain competition. The aim being to make people better at utilising the potential of their adwords account. Plus you could win a trip to Oz! That’s the down-under Oz, not the one with the mentally handicapped scarecrow, Tinman with coronary heart disease and a Lion with a blatant inferiority complex and passive aggressive tendencies. Also, Google are giving away even more to worthy businesses in a competition which has been running since 2008. And on their birthday too!

Analytics got some attention too with a new weighted sort option allowing you to sort your data by the ever scientific term “interestingness”. In addition, a new episode of analytics TV is out. With such a cliff-hanger in the last episode, can this one match up?

Finally this week, we looked at whether Windows Phone 7 OS will match up to iPhone or Android. Going by their past record on phones they’d be lucky to match up to a pager. Also will Google Instant’s blacklist affect SEO? We lift the lid on this terrifying phenomenon while also getting a sneak peak at Google translates conversation mode. Say goodbye to language classes.

Anyway, I have to go now. I’m still on a comedown and the cabbages keep satirizing Shakespeare.

“No, Hamlet’s perpetual indecision and inability to act was not a cop out as a fatal flaw. Stop staring at my custard plant!”
