Ramsay’s Web Wire – Issue #4: Crash of the Titans

In a somewhat congested Web Wire this week it might be harder to stay on topic due to bouts of hallucination and hysteria brought on by a combination of pain killers and max strength citrus-based cough releavant. Of course I’ll do my best to stay focused, despite the pink dragon in the corner.

Every once in a while the internet titans come out and really start sizing each other up in a game of ‘who’s got the bigger cable’. This week has seen Microsoft weigh-in against Google and Apple, and despite the obvious weight difference, Microsoft is definitely punching above its weight. ‘Bing’ ‘Bing’, round 1!

Microsoft Bing gets things underway with a kidney dig to other search engines advertising. New Bing adverts which started this week make a less than subtle remark on the obscurity of a-certain-companies search results. Perhaps a little below the belt there, but I’m going to allow it. Google however are no slouch and hit with fresh speculation that they are moving into the world of TV with new technology for set top boxes to make channel surfing easier, provide better internet and YouTube access and maybe even replace the remote control. Google take the final round with the best browser as Chrome outdoes Internet Explorer in a string of tests from performance to standards compliance.

Next up is tonight’s main event between Microsoft and Apple. In the technology department these two are building towards a showdown of new kit. With the iPad receiving mixed press since its announcement, Microsoft could take this round if their rumoured digital journal Courier lives up to the hype surrounding it. However, Apple have clearly put extensive work into the iPhone (their signature move) with speculation of a variety of new features which could grace the 4G iPhone powerhouse.

As is so often the case in over-baked boxing metaphors (as in real boxing) it all ends in a tie with no one willing to go for the killer blow. Hopefully with all of these new technologies on the way from Microsoft, Apple and Google it won’t be long before we can pick a winner.

Elsewhere this week Google have taken on StumbleUpon (will they ever stop) with a service of their own. Google Reader’s new Play feature allows users to skip through a variety of useful, interesting and funny bid-bits from internet land. Their Webmaster Tool also gets a look in with two brand new features they’ve also announced that page loading speed will also soon be taken as a metric for rating sites.

Twitter this week also offered up new info on how they intend to curb spamming and malicious links, while good o'l Matt Cutts offered some insight into the good kind of link building. As for me, with the weekend almost here I go in search of more medication to feed my worrying new Citrus remedy habit.
